About the Publications Department

The Israel Academy Law specifies among its goals the publication of “writings calculated to promote scholarship and science.” For this purpose, the Academy maintains a standing Publications Committee, whose decisions are carried out by the Publications Department. The Academy’s publications include the products of research projects that it initiates with the aim of creating foundations for scholarly activity, as well as collective volumes issuing from the Academy’s scholarly activities, such as seminars, workshops and the Young Scholars Forum. The Academy also publishes works submitted to the Publications Committee that have been deemed of enduring scholarly worth and that it sees fit to publish, in accord with its publications policy. Most of the Academy’s publications in Hebrew are in the humanities and bear a relation to Jewish studies. The Academy’s publications in English and in other languages embrace many fields of knowledge, in the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences.

Many publications in the humanities are critical editions of manuscripts and other basic source texts of importance to cultural history from ancient to modern times, in such areas as Jewish history, the history of Jewish thought and religion, medieval Jewish thought, and Jewish languages. In the natural sciences, the Academy publishes authoritative compilations on the fauna, flora and geology of the region and related publications on environmental issues and biological diversity.

Guest lectures delivered at events held by the Academy are published in the Proceedings of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

The Publications Department disseminates information about its publications in Israel and abroad by means of announcements and brochures, distributed mainly by email and, where appropriate, by regular mail, to dedicated mailing lists delimited by subject. The Academy also works with professional distributors.
