In 1988, a delegation from the Academy visited the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and together the two academies established the Israeli Academic Center in Beijing even before the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In 1991, an Agreement for Scientific Cooperation was signed with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
 
To mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Israeli Academic Center in Beijing, a bi-national nanotechnology workshop was held in June 2015 with the participation of the president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Chun Li. In September 2015, an Israeli delegation visited the Chinese Academy in Beijing and Shanghai, and President Li hosted the delegation at a festive celebration to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Academic Center.
    
In October 2018, a delegation from the Chinese Academy led by Vice President Prof. Zhang Yaping, visited the Academy. Members of the delegation met with the president of the Academy, Prof. Nili Cohen, vice president, Prof. David Harel, and former chairman of the Division of Natural Sciences, Prof. Itamar Willner.
The meeting emphasized the importance of strengthening the scientific links between the two academies and it was decided to encourage joint conferences and workshops. The first conference, on “Nano” was to be held in Israel in 2020, but has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
