Bilateral Conference in Hungary: Centennial Commemoration of the passing of Ignaz Goldziher

November 15-16 2021, The Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Avicenna Institute of Middle Eastern Studies hosted a commemorative conference in Budapest in cooperation with the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The conference, on the subject of “Reward and Punishment” marked 100 years since the death of the renowned Jewish Hungarian scholar of Islam, Ignaz Goldziher.
 
During the conference, a special eulogy was delivered by Hungarian Academy member and Director of the Avicenna Institute Prof. Miklós Maróth, in memory of recently deceased Israel Academy member Prof. Shaul Shaked. Prof. Shaked was a world-renowned scholar of Religious and Iranian Studies, and a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
 
Lectures at the conference were delivered by Israel Academy member Prof. Yohanan Friedmann, head of the Israeli steering committee and Prof Yair Lorberbaum, of Bar Ilan University.
 
In January 2022, the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities will host a second bilateral workshop with the Hungarian Academy in Jerusalem, commemorating Ignáz Goldziher.
