Former Academy President Prof. Nili Cohen Lectures at Symposium Honoring Former German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina Prof. Jörg Hacker

Former Academy President Prof. Nili Cohen attended a symposium on July 5, 2022 honoring the seventieth birthday of Prof. Jörg Hacker, former president of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and a close friend of Israel, of Israeli science, and particularly of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The title of the symposium, which was held in the German National Academy of Sciences building in Halle, was Of Bacteria, Men, and Science. The title of Prof. Cohen’s lecture was On Friendship, Love, and the Philosopher’s Stone: Jörg Hacker as a Citizen of the World.
 
Prof. Hacker, a highly accomplished microbiologist, served as the Leopoldina’s president from 2010 to 2020. Former German chancellor Angela Merkel also spoke in honor of Prof. Hacker at the symposium, as did the Leopoldina’s current president, Prof. Gerald Haug. Prof. Cohen met during the symposium with Prof. Hacker and Prof. Haug, and also with Prof. Christoph Markschies, president of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
