Department: School of Public Health, University of Haifa
University: School of Public Health, University of Haifa
Research Topics: psychological functioning and psychedelic drugs
DUration: 2-4 years
Comments:
Research related to the effects and therapeutic applications of psychedelic drugs has grown considerably in recent years. Data will be obtained from participants who use psychedelics in their own natural environment. As such the proposed study will provide an ecologically valid evidence-base that reflects the actual experiences of people who use psychedelics. The study will use both qualitative and quantitative methods to reach a better understanding of patterns and motivations of use of psychedelic drugs and their short and long term effects. Qualitative methods will include in-depth interviews with psychedelic users. Quantitative methods will include both cross sectional and longitudinal data analyses.

Research Topics:
Development of a comprehensive theoretical framework for the electronic, thermal and optical response of metals under high intensity illumination.

I am looking for PhD students / Post-Doctoral fellows for theoretical work towards a comprehensive study of the combined optical, electronic and thermal response of metal nanostructures to intense optical illumination. This will be a follow up of our previous work on the topic employed for low intensities, which enabled a re-interpretation of previous results on plasmon-assisted photo-catalysis [Sivan et al., Science 2019; Dubi & Sivan, Light: Science & Applications 2019, …].

The project involves calculations of electronic rate equations coupled to the Maxwell and heat equations based on a new theoretical model. Applications include extending our previous for non-Drude metals and semiconductors, a comprehensive study of light emission from metals and its use for (transient) thermometry, comparison of coherent and incoherent nonlinearities of metals etc..

Prior experience in plasmonics and/or nonlinear optics and/or solid state physics is an advantage.

The program provides scholarships through the following initiatives:
attracts high achieving postdoctoral scholars from premier universities in the United States to do research at one of seven Israeli universities. Once they complete their research, many Zuckerman postdocs are expected to accept faculty positions at top North American universities, weaving a network of academic collaboration and goodwill that will greatly benefit US Israeli scientific cooperation.
provides additional support to Israeli researchers who have been accepted to a postdoctoral program with a stipend at an American university.
Zuckerman Scholars enjoy unique programming and activities specially organized for them by the host universities, such as touring, educational experiences, and social programs. These programs are aimed at strengthening the scholars’ knowledge of and connection to Israel, and at cultivating an esprit de corps within the program, enabling them to exchange ideas and foster new relationships.
Candidates for the Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program are assessed based on their academic and research achievements, qualities of personal merit and leadership.

Medical cannabis, pain and depression
DUration: 2-4 years
Comments:
Project description:
Medical cannabis (MC) is a multimodal rapidly effective treatment that has the potential to treat multiple symptoms and conditions such as pain and depression concurrently. However, there is currently a lack of evidence to develop clinical guidelines in the realm of MC treatment in pain-depression comorbidity. The study will use an intensive longitudinal assessment design known as experience sampling method (ESM) to elucidate momentary and lagged associations between chronic pain, depression severity and self-titrated MC doses. The knowledge gained will move the research field towards a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying associations between pain and psychological responses and explore the potential clinical efficacy and risks of targeting the endocannabinoid system for pain relief and comorbid depression. Data will be obtained from chronic pain patients who use whole plant MC in their own natural environment. As such the proposed study will provide an ecologically valid evidence-base that reflect the actual experiences of people who use MC to treat symptoms of chronic pain.

A postdoc position is available at the Rivlin lab in the Weizmann neurobiology department; Massive work was done to decipher the neural code of the visual information at the retina level. How do retinal targets integrate and process the retinal output is still an unsolved question. The aim of the project is to reveal how visual information is processed along the main visual pathway. For that, advanced in vivo imaging techniques will be used in combination with retinal manipulations using pharmacogenetics and other methods. Computational/engineering background and programming experience are preferable. Experience with two-photon imaging is an advantage. Good social skills and a sense of humour are a must. Interested candidates with proven academic record are requested to send a cover letter, CV and contact details of 3 referees to michal.rivlin@weizmann.ac.il

RNA is modified by >100 chemical modifications. These modifications are, in some cases, highly ubiquitous, conserved and dynamically regulated in mRNA, imposing a unique and uncharacterized regulatory code. Our lab aims to crack this code, and understand how modifications on mRNA direct gene expression programs and cell state decisions. Our lab bridges experimental and computational aspects of biological research, combining genomic, genetic, and biochemical approaches with tailored computational ones.
