Kavli Frontiers of Science Program

The special connection formed by the collaboration agreement between the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the U.S. National Academy of Science (NAS) is reflected by the Kavli Frontiers of Science (FoS) Program.

The initiative started in 2013. It includes inter-disciplinary conferences in the natural sciences, attended by outstanding young scientists from both countries. The 1st symposium took place in June 2013 in the U.S., the 2nd symposium was in September 2015 in Jerusalem, the 3rd symposium took place in February 2017 in the U.S., and the 4th symposium was in September 2019 in Jerusalem. Academy Member Prof. David Harel leads the project on behalf of the Academy.

Since these conferences are interdisciplinary by nature, discussions are distinctly jargon-free. Each session is composed of an introductory lecture followed by two additional lectures. After the lectures, a substantial part of the session time is dedicated to questions and discussion with the audience. Thus, participants gain exposure to topics completely new to them and unique collaboration opportunities arise. In the U.S., where the program began in 1989, many Kavli fellows subsequently went on to become NAS members, and more than a few have received the Nobel Prize.
