The Academy congratulates Prof. Zelig Eshhar a member of the Academy and an immunologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, on winning the 2024 Canada Gairdner International Award. This award recognizes Prof. Eshhar's groundbreaking contribution to developing and applying cancer cell therapy.

Prof. Eshhar is a pioneer of CAR-T therapy, in which immune system cells are genetically upgraded to identify and destroy cancer cells efficiently. His research paved the way for the development of revolutionary life-saving treatments for cancer patients, especially those with ovarian tumors and leukemia. CAR-T therapy was approved by the FDA as the first gene transfer-based therapy and patients benefit from this treatment worldwide. The Academy congratulates him on his exceptional achievements.
