Tibat Marqe

A Collection of Samaritan Midrashim

Author(s):
Series: Sources and Studies in Samaritan Literature
Where previous scholars had viewed the Samaritan Tibat Marqe as a single composition, the present author discerns in it six disparate works that were brought together: "The Book of Wonders"; "On the Depths of the Spring of Eden"; "And Moses and the Priests the Levites Spoke"; "And Moses Spoke in the Ears of the Whole Congregation of Israel"; "And Moses, the Servant of God, Died There"; and "On the Twenty-Two Letters, the Elements of the Hebrew Words". The first five books are allegorical interpretations of biblical texts, the sixth an allegorical treatment of the meaning of the alphabet.
Ben-Hayyim"s edition is based on two manuscripts, which are presented synoptically. The notes are mainly linguistic, but also shed light on the content, especially with regard to Samaritan beliefs.
