Report Towards Sustainable Food Systems in Israel: From Science to Policy | 2025

The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities is publishing a policy report on: "Towards Sustainable Food Systems in Israel: From Science to Policy"

The report was written by Dr. Emily Soo, Prof. Elliot Barry, and Prof. Eran Feitelson, and expresses a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach that addresses the many complex aspects of food security. The report maps the food policy gaps in Israel and the challenges it faces as a basis for outlining policies to transform Israel's food system into a more resilient, equitable and sustainable system - one that will enable healthy nutrition for everyone.

Following several global factors - including the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, the increase in extreme weather events, the Russia-Ukraine war, the war in Gaza and northern Israel, and regional wars - it has become clear how vulnerable current food systems are. A significant number of Israel's residents suffer from food affordability issues and food insecurity. Due to the crises in Israel and worldwide, urgent steps must be taken to prevent their adverse effects on the food system.

This report is based on discussions from the international conference "Food Insecurity - The Ongoing Epidemic," which was held in 2022 organized by the Academy. The report is published in Hebrew and English, and we sincerely thank everyone who took part in its preparation and production.
