As stipulated in the
Academy Law, one of the roles of The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities is “to advise the government on activities relating to research and scientific planning of national significance, including – at its own initiative – providing assessments of the state of science in Israel and submitting said reports and overviews… as well as providing advise and information to government ministries.”
The Academy’s advisory work includes activity in the fields of science policy and science-based policy. The purpose of this activity is to promote decision-making and policy formulation based on data, facts, and scientific knowledge. To this end, the Academy places at the service of decision-makers and the general public its resources as a statutory, neutral, independent and internationally renowned organization with a broad network of connections with leading scientists and investigators.
Over the years, the Academy has fulfilled its advisory role by engaging in activities such as preparing the
Report on the State of the Sciences in Israel, as well as the reports of other committees established in in response to emergent needs, such as the Interdisciplinary Expert Committee for Examining the Climate in Israel; the Nutritional Security Committee; the Expert Committee for Sustainable Well-Being in Israel; and the National Steering Committee Reviewing the State of Marine Sciences in Israel. The most distinguished scientists and experts in Israel, and sometimes outside it, are recruited to these committees. In the field of education, the Academy has worked to promote the use of research-based knowledge via the Yozma Center for Knowledge and Research in Education.
Today, a dedicated department is responsible for the Academy’s advisory work. Its goal is to promote and expand this activity by providing research- and science-based consulting and strengthening the relationship between the Academy and the government.
