From September 14 to 17, 2025, the 15th meeting of
GISFOH (German-Israeli Frontiers of the Humanities) took place in Germany. GISFOH is a joint initiative of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.
This annual forum brings together around 50 early-career researchers—within 15 years of earning their PhDs—from the humanities and social sciences in Israel and Germany. Its goal is to promote interdisciplinary and international collaboration and to lay the foundation for future joint research.
The 2025 in-person conference was held under the theme "Embracing Complexity: Perspectives on the Human Mosaic." The selected topics included art history, emotion measurement, (alternative) families, and disability studies.
Each year, four young researchers from Israel and four from Germany are selected to co-organize the next event, including planning and moderating four thematic sessions. Each session includes presentations by the organizers and additional invited researchers from both countries, with ample time for discussion.
The Israeli members of the 2025 organizing committee were:
Prof. Gal Ventura (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
Dr. Hadar Fisher (Bar-Ilan University)
Prof. Kinneret Lahad (Tel Aviv University)
Dr. Nitzan Almog (Ono Academic College)
The 16th GISFOH conference is scheduled to take place in November 2026 at the Israel Academy in Jerusalem. The theme will be "Access," with focus areas including democracy, housing, food, and language.
