This week, the Israel Academy hosted a high-level delegation from Ghana, composed of Vice-Chancellors and Pro-Vice-Chancellors of leading universities in the country. The delegation was accompanied by Mr. Aviel Avraham, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Israel in Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, based in Accra, the capital of Ghana.
The delegation met with Prof. David Harel, President of the Academy; Prof. Margalit Finkelberg, Vice President; Prof. Naama Goren-Inbar, Prof. Sarah Stroumsa, and Prof. Guy G. Stroumsa, Members of the Academy; and Esther Sivan, Director General. The guests learned about the Academy’s activities and discussed opportunities for enhancing scientific collaboration between the two countries. They also visited the exhibition “A Gathering Place of Scholars,” which presents the history and ongoing work of the Academy.
During the visit, the guests were deeply moved to see the original copy of the historic 1965 agreement on scientific cooperation between the academies of Israel and Ghana. This agreement, the first international cooperation agreement ever signed by the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, was signed by Prof. Aharon Katzir, then President of the Academy, and Prof. William Emmanuel Abraham, a distinguished Ghanaian philosopher. The signing of the agreement marked the beginning of a scientific friendship between two young nations united by their shared belief in the power of science, education, and the human spirit.
